Pine Wood Derby Rules Pine Wood Derby
Each year a new car must be built. Scouts can not use a car raced in any previous Pinewood Derby.
The official scales that will be used on the day of the race will also be available for pre-race weighing (your Den Leader has the times and places). These scales will be calibrated with the official weight, and all cars must be weighed according to this scale. THERE WILL BE NO WEIGH IN ON SATURDAY THE DAY OF THE EVENT. This will enable the Derby Committee to start the race on time. The Post Office scales tend to weigh a few grams lighter than the official Pinewood Derby scale and should only be used to get you in the ballpark. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO WEIGH AND REGISTER YOUR CAR PRIOR TO SATURDAY’S RACE. We will again have a fund-raising concession stand at the race. Your support would be appreciated in the form of donating items for the stand, volunteering time during the race to assist in running the stand, and/or simply bringing along your appetite!
OFFICIAL RULES
All cars must pass inspection to qualify for the race. The inspection points are as follows:
-The scout must have made the car during the current year. -The width of the car shall not exceed 2.75 inches. -The length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches. -The height of the car shall not exceed 3 inches. -The weight of the car shall not exceed 5 ounces. -Axles and wheels shall be as provided in the kit. In order to make the race fair for everyone, all wheels and axles must be as provided in the current kits. -Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are prohibited. -Wheel treatment (hub and tread smoothing and polishing) may not result in substantial removal of mass nor in reducing the tread (track contact) width from the original kit wheels (no grooving, radiusing, wedging, etc. of the tread). THE SHAPE OF THE WHEEL MAY NOT BE CHANGED. -The car shall not ride on any kind or type of springs. -The car must be freewheeling, with no starting devices. -Any details must be firmly attached, and within the length, width, height, and weight limits. -Pre-cut wood blocks will be allowed, but the wheels and axles from the kit provided by the Pack must be used.
New for 2009 Pine Wood Derby
-This year we will be randomizing the heats. When each scout registers his car his name will be placed into a can and prior to each heat names will be drawn. The number of scouts per heat will be decided after we have a total of how many scouts registered. Example #1: If 40 scouts are registered for the event we will have 5 heats of 8 scouts. Example #2 if 44 scouts are registered for the event the first 4 heats will have 9 scouts and the last heat will have 8 scouts.
-The day of the event each scout will be assigned a number. Please check in at the registration table for your scout's number.
-Trophies will be awarded for the top three finishers in each heat.
-After all heats have been completed the fastest X amount of overall cars will be made into a final heat that will compete for the Grand Championship. The number of entries into the final heat will again be determined by the total number of scouts registered. In most cases the final heat will consist of the number of scouts that were in the regular heats. Example#1: If 40 scouts are registered for the event and each heat had 8 scouts the fastest 8 overall cars will be entered into the final heat. Example #2: It is possible your scout could finish in 4th place in his heat and still be eligible for the final heat competing for the Grand Champion. It is also possible that your scout could finish first in his heat and not be eligible for the final heat. The final heat is determined by time.
